Shiraz rugs, which are woolen and often knotted for wool, have a base of dark red or blue. Nature themes are emphasized in the herding carpet pattern: animals, hunting, sometimes flowers. Because Shiraz has a knot density at the loose end, fine-grained patterns are neither possible nor sought. The finished carpet shows the handprint of its creator, the circumstances of its creation and minor imperfections. Shiraz is a basic carpet with excellent value for money, which will wear out over decades of use.
